Youth Artist Profile: Dakota

We are reaching out to our youth artists in the community for their stories, values, and music. These youth would be the youth to benefit from our Call & Response campaign. In his own words…
Location: Wayne, Michigan

What motivates you as an artist?
My love for God and the inspiration from the faces of those I play for are what keep me going with what I do.

Is there a background story to your music?
I was raised on country and bluegrass, metal and soul. My music is a reflection of all thoes in one. My music is my own blend of thevoices and sounds that shaped who I am today.

What are you trying to communicate through your music? What is your story?
My music is different than your “norm” of today. I’m a God loving 17 year old with ideas, lyrics and melodies always ever present in my mind. music is my drug. I feen for it. I am lost without it. There are so many things that play into my daily life and music is always there. My music is a reflection of all I have been, all that I am, and all that I will be.

Why is music essential to you?
It keeps me sane in the most difficult of times. It is my rock, my stronghold and my most prized skill.

If applicable, how has Community Records L3C already helped you so far? What impact has this had?
Community Records has had such an impact in my life Jesse and Mr. Jackson have been such an insperation and now Starlet and Invincible are right there with them. It has been my pleasure working alongside such inspiring individuals.

What would you do with the opportunity to record an album and have performance opportunities?
I would work as hard as I could to not let those who have supported me so much down. I would grab this opportunity by the reins and never let go. In the words of Robert Frost, ”let us reach for the stars and take earth along for the ride.”

We look forward to working with powerful young artists like Dakota in the future. If you know a local artist, let us know. We may just feature them.

1.What motivates you as an artist?
-When someone says that i cant do something.
-When people judge me.
-My competitiveness.
-Struggling family.

2.Is there a background story to your music?
-In my music i talk about different experiences that i have encountered.
-I have used my music to express myself and to also stay out of trouble.

3.What are you trying to communicate through your music? What is your story?
Alot of people give up before they reach the end of the tunnel. I want to display a character to music with attributes of a warrior. A character that has been faced with alot but fights through and doesnt give up. I guess I want to communicate determination, passion, and domination through my music.

4.Why is music essential to you?
Music is my ultimate way of expressing myself and relating to others at the same time which is what music is about in my opinion.

5.If applicable, how has Community Records L3C already helped you so far? What impact has this had?
Community records impacted my musical career at the very front door of its BEGINNING. Because of community records I was able to give my first performance.

6.What would you do with the opportunity to record an album and have performance opportunities?
-If I had these opportunities on my plate I would definately bring out the fork and knife or in this case the pen and paper. I would professionally take advantage of the opportunity at hand and make Community Records, fans, friends, family and myself PROUD.

Youth Artist Profile: Jabari

We are reaching out to our youth artists in the community for their stories, values, and music. These youth would be the youth to benefit from our Call & Response campaign. Jabari has worked with us before and is a great creative citizen. In his own words…
JabariMy name is Jabari and I’m from Inkster, Michigan. I am a vocal artist and poet. Music has always been a big part of my life. Growing up in the hood, I’ve seen, heard, and experienced many things that no one should have to go through. Many times I just wanted to give up, but something has always been there to pick me up….music. Music has always help to uplift me, bring me back to that place of comfort, place of happieness. I want to bring my testimony to people in places like mine. I want tell people that there are better ways to cope than drugs, gangs, and violence. Making an album and performing would help me to get my message to people who truly need it. And I say thank you to Community Records for helping to make my dream a reality. - “iZeya”

The Rain

“and though the rain keeps falling down–I know the sun can’t wash away”

-Dead Prez-

Reminds me of the voice of up and coming Community Records artist Antonia Moses. Her lyrics are like sweet raindrops that are cool to the soul. That is what soul music is all about. Stories from the heart to give warmth to the light of poetic words. Get a sneak peek of her in the latest Community Records promo video singing “Killing Me Softly”:
